Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) Legislation

The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) came into force in England and Wales on April 1st 2018.

It is aimed at encouraging landlords and property owners to improve the energy efficiency of their properties by ensuring all privately owned properties have an EPC rating of at least an 'E' or above before they are sold or let. There are some exemptions, for example if a property is a holiday home, motor home or listed building.

Those who fail to make the necessary changes will be subject to the appropriate fines: up to £5,000 for domestic dwellings and up to £150,000 for non-domestic properties.
